During breast reduction surgery, the surgeon will use general anesthesia or local anesthesia for the patient’s comfort. The patient may see swelling and feel some soreness after the surgery, but that will fade away after a few days. The surgeon may prescribe some painkillers for the patient. Applying ice packs may also help in reducing the soreness.
The amount of time needed to fully recover from breast reduction surgery varies for everyone, based on the individual’s natural healing rate and the extent of the surgery performed. Breasts often heal at different rates, so they may look asymmetrical during the first few months of recovery.
While some patients may find immediate relief from back and shoulder pain after the surgery, other patients may need some time to see the final results of the surgery. Since swelling is common after the surgery, the patient’s breasts may look a bit larger than expected until the initial swelling goes down.
