We all have our thoughts on what constitutes "perfect" lips. Some find a full, lusciously hydrated pout attractive while others think of a thin and petite look as appealing. If someone thinks their lips are imperfect, they hesitate to smile and their self-image gets affected. No matter how your lip shape may be now, you can change it into a size more comfortable for you by getting lip surgery to enhance or reduce the lip size!
Lip surgery is a cosmetic procedure where the surgeon changes the appearance of the patient’s lips to make them look more aesthetically pleasing and to bring a balance to the patient’s facial features. A lip surgery improves the appearance of the lips without affecting their functionality.
There are two types of lip surgeries:
Lip Enhancement: Lip enhancement (also known as lip augmentation or augmentation cheiloplasty) is a type of cosmetic procedure where the size and volume of the lips are increased. This is done either by using hyaluronic acid fillers (HA fillers) or fat grafting.
Lip Reduction: Lip reduction (also known as reduction cheiloplasty) is a type of cosmetic procedure where the size and volume of the lips are surgically reduced. This is done by removing excess skin and tissue from the lips.
A person can be considered to be an ideal candidate for lip surgery if:
They are of sound health.
They are a non-smoker or are willing to quit smoking for the period prescribed by the doctor.
They are unsatisfied by the appearance of their lips.
They have realistic expectations from the lip surgery.
If you fit the above criteria, then you are an ideal candidate for lip surgery. Book an appointment with Dr. Vasant Gholave of Arra Aesthetics to learn about your options.
During the consultation for lip surgery, Dr. Vasant Gholave, Director of Arra Aesthetics, will analyze the patient’s lips and ask the patient whether they wish to reduce their size or enlarge them. He will make sure to understand the desires and needs of the patient and give them advice about the most suitable procedure. He will explain the full procedure in detail, including possible risks and expected results so that the patient can make an informed decision regarding the procedure.
Dr. Gholave believes that open communication between patient and doctor is essential for the best result, so he will encourage the patient to ask any doubts or questions they may have. He will do his best to answer all of the patient’s doubts so that the patient can go through the procedure with a clear mind.
The procedure of the lip surgery will depend on the type of lip surgery being performed.
The following are the steps of lip enhancement or lip augmentation:
Fat Grafting:
Local anesthesia is administered for the comfort of the patient.
The surgeon removes small amounts of fat from the cheeks by liposuction.
The surgeon then injects the fat into the lips to give them a plump and voluminous appearance.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers:
The surgeon injects small quantities of hyaluronic acid fillers (HA fillers) into the lips to increase their volume.
This procedure is completed very quickly and with minimal pain.
The following are the steps of lip reduction or reduction cheiloplasty:
Local anesthesia is administered for the comfort of the patient.
The surgeon makes a horizontal incision on the lip that needs to be reduced in size. The surgeon takes care to ensure that the incision is on a non-visible part of the lip.
The surgeon then removes the excess fat and tissue from the lip.
Finally, the surgeon closes the incision using absorbable stitches or sutures.
The recovery after lip surgery depends on the type of lip surgery that is performed.
Lip enhancement or lip augmentation is a minimally invasive procedure so the downtime needed after the procedure is very low. Some swelling after the procedure is expected. The patient will be advised to apply ice packs to the swollen lip. The results of the procedure will be immediately visible after the swelling goes down.
Lip reduction or reduction cheiloplasty is a more invasive procedure than lip enhancement. So the required downtime will be longer. Some soreness and swelling after the procedure is expected. The surgeon will prescribe medications to control the soreness and swelling. The sutures may take some time to come out fully, ranging from a few days to two weeks. The lip will be fully healed during this period.
The patient must diligently attend the follow-up appointments so that the surgeon can analyze the healing of the lips and ensure that no complications have occurred.
Lip surgery may be minimally invasive, but it does carry a few possible risks and side effects like:
Pain
Swelling
Bleeding
Redness
These side effects are rarely seen and tend to be temporary. However, if they persist, book an appointment with the surgeon immediately.
At Arra Aesthetics, our team of experts takes utmost care during the procedure to ensure that these side effects will not occur.
