The nose is a central feature of the face, and it often determines one’s overall looks. An aesthetically pleasing nose has been considered to be a sign of beauty since ancient times. Unfortunately, not everyone has the good fortune to be born with a good-looking nose.
Some people have noses that are misshapen, wide, bumpy, or deformed. This not only affects their appearance but may also affect the functionality of their nose. In such cases, they can choose to undergo rhinoplasty surgery and reshape their nose to improve its functionality and appearance.
Rhinoplasty surgery, more popularly known as “nose job,” is a surgical procedure that can change the appearance and the size of the nose. Rhinoplasty involves altering the skin, cartilage, and the bone of the nose either individually or altogether.
There are different types of rhinoplasty based on how the procedure is performed and why it is performed. Here are the different types of rhinoplasty surgery:
Open Rhinoplasty:
In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes the incision in the skin between the nostrils. This procedure leaves behind a very faint scar that fades away gradually.
Closed Rhinoplasty:
In a closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes the incisions within the nostrils, and leaves behind minimal and mostly internal scarring.
Rhinoplasty-Tip:
In a rhinoplasty-tip procedure, the surgeon carefully removes cartilage from the tip of the nose to reshape it. This procedure has minimal scarring.
Nostril Alteration:
In this procedure, the surgeon changes the size of the nostrils by making tiny incisions that leave behind minimal scarring that is hidden by the nostril crease.
Septo-Rhinoplasty:
A septoplasty is a procedure that is performed to repair a deviated septum. It is often combined with a rhinoplasty procedure to simultaneously improve the aesthetic appearance as well as the functionality of the nose.
A rhinoplasty can be done to address several nose-related issues, like:
Reducing nose length
Reducing nose size
Reshaping the tip of the nose
Reducing or eliminating a bridge hump
Adjusting the size and shape of the nostrils
Fixing asymmetrical noses
Improving breathing difficulties
Dr. Vasant Gholave, director of Arra Aesthetics, Pune, has given the criteria for a good candidate for a nose job or a nose surgery. The ideal candidate for rhinoplasty should be:
An adult with completed facial growth
An overall healthy person
A non-smoker or someone who is willing to quit smoking for the period prescribed
Unhappy with their nose
If you fit into the above criteria, then you are a good candidate for a rhinoplasty. Book a consultation with Dr. Vasant Gholave to learn more.
During the consultation, Dr. Vasant Gholave will discuss with the patient their reasons for choosing rhinoplasty and what changes they wish to make. He will carefully examine the nose and the overall facial structure of the patient. He will advise the patient on what type of rhinoplasty would be most suitable for them.
Dr. Vasant Gholave believes that open communication between the patient and the surgeon is of the utmost importance. That is why he will explain the detailed procedure to the patient, including possible risks and the optimal result that can be expected from the procedure. He will answer all questions and doubts the patients may have and ensure that the patient has realistic expectations from the procedure.
If rhinoplasty is done to reconstruct a damaged nose following an accident or to improve the nose's functioning (like septoplasty surgery), insurance may cover it. If the surgery is only for cosmetic or aesthetic reasons, it will be considered cosmetic, and hence it is not covered by insurance. The total cost of a rhinoplasty includes numerous elements like:
Fees for consultation and the medical staff
Cost of pre-surgical tests and post-surgery dressing
Cost of the surgical facility
The fees for a rhinoplasty are determined by the sort of nose surgery performed, the approach utilized, the surgeon's skill and experience, the location of the facility where the operation is performed, and whether or not it has been certified.
The average cost of rhinoplasty ranges from Rs. 60,000/- to Rs. 1,80,000/- + 18% GST at Arra Aesthetics, Pune. Dr. Vasant Gholave will discuss every aspect of the cost of rhinoplasty with you during consultation.
Before the procedure, Dr. Vasant Gholave will ask for the patient’s complete medical history to ensure that procedure goes smoothly and without any complications. He may also ask the patient to undergo some blood tests to check for any issues.
The patient will also be asked to not eat anything for at least 6 hours before the surgery takes place.
Here are the steps involved in rhinoplasty surgery:
Step 1: General anesthesia or local anesthesia will be administered.
Step 2: Depending on the type of rhinoplasty (open or closed), the surgeon will make incisions either internally or externally.
Step 3: Then, based on the patient’s needs and the purpose of the rhinoplasty surgery, the surgeon will reshape the nose. The process may involve either one or all of the following changes to the nose:
Decreasing or increasing the size
Widening or narrowing
Shortening or lengthening the tip
Step 4: If the patient has a deviated septum, the surgeon will perform a septoplasty to correct breathing issues by straightening the nose.
Step 5: After the surgeon achieves the desired shape of the nose, he will close the incisions with stitches.
After the procedure, a splint will be placed over the nose. The splint will be removed after a few days. If needed, packs will be placed inside the nostrils and ice packs will be put over the eyes to minimize swelling and bruises.
The patient will be advised to rest for a few days to facilitate the healing process. The surgeon may also prescribe pain medications to alleviate any pain the patient may feel.
The surgeon will give the patient instructions on taking care of the site like avoiding extreme vigorous exercise, avoiding extreme facial expressions, and taking baths instead of showers till the recovery process is complete. The patient must attend follow-up appointments with the surgeon so that the recovery process and the results can be monitored.
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure and like all surgical procedures, there are a few risks associated with it. They are:
Bleeding
Scarring
Chances of infection
Prolonged swelling and pain
Numbness
Discoloration
Difficulty in breathing
Poor healing
Unsatisfactory results
These risks are rarely seen and at Arra Aesthetics, Pune, we do our best to ensure the safety and satisfaction of our patients.
