Aging is one of those things we all dread to think about, and yet it’s so inevitable. Aging takes place gradually with fine lines and wrinkles appearing on your face. Over time, your face tends to look baggy and aged.
People want to regain their glowing, youthful appearance, but surgery is not always an option for them. They may not be eligible candidates, the cost of the procedure may be too high, or they simply do not feel comfortable undergoing surgery. In this case, fillers are the ideal solution!
Fillers are soft, gel-like substances that are used to improve the appearance of the face. They can be used to add volume, alter the contours, and fill in wrinkles. There are many different types of fillers that can be used in a variety of ways.
Fillers can be used if:
There are fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, forehead, and eyes.
The cheeks or the overall face look hollow due to loss of volume.
There are scars left by acne or injuries.
The appearance of the eyes can be improved with under-eye fillers, while lip fillers can enhance the shape and appearance of the lips. Facial fillers can be used to add volume to cheeks and reshape the nose, chin, and jawline. Fillers as an anti-aging treatment can also be used in the neck, hands, and feet.
The different types of fillers are:
Permanent Fillers: Permanent fillers are made of polymethylmethacrylate or PMMA (microspheres that are not absorbed by the body) and collagen. They can last up to 5 years and are recommended for areas with thick skin like the nasolabial folds (the lines on either side of the mouth that extend from the edge of the nose to the corners of the mouth).
Semi-Permanent Fillers: Semi-permanent fillers contain thick substances like biodegradable synthetic filler (poly-L-lactic acid) and are used to treat deep facial lines. They can last about 12 to 18 months.
Temporary Fillers: Temporary fillers are the most common fillers available and can last about 6 to 12 months. There are three types of temporary fillers:
Hyaluronic Acid-Based Fillers: Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally occurs in the body that keeps the skin plump and hydrated. Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are used to increase volume and promote fullness.
Calcium Hydroxylapatite-Based Fillers: Calcium hydroxylapatite is a material that is usually found in bones. It is heavier and denser when compared to hyaluronic acid. Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers are commonly used to reshape the jawline. They do not cause any immune or allergic reactions and are injected deep underneath the skin.
Collagen-Based Fillers: Like hyaluronic acid, collagen is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. It is a protein that adds strength and structure to the skin. Collagen fillers are used to restore the support structure of the skin and replenish the body’s collagen.
During the consultation, Dr. Vasant Gholave, Director of Arra Aesthetics, Pune, will explain the procedure to the patient. He will answer any questions the patient may have and discuss the patient’s goals with them. He will ensure that the patient has realistic expectations for the results of the treatment.
First, the areas where the fillers need to be injected are marked.
Generally, anesthesia is not required during fillers treatment, as it is a minimally invasive procedure. But sometimes a topical anesthetic may be used, and some fillers contain a local anesthetic like lidocaine to make the patient comfortable during the injection.
Dr. Vasant Gholave is very careful while injecting the fillers, to prevent any damage to the underlying structure or to the nerves.
The amount of injections required depends on the patient’s face and the number of wrinkles to be filled.
The entire procedure can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to be completed.
The patient may notice some swelling or bruising in the target area immediately after the treatment. This is completely normal and the doctor may give cold packs to reduce the swelling. Though the period of swelling depends on the type of fillers used, the swelling and bruising should disappear within 7 to 10 days. The doctor may advise the patient to avoid wearing makeup, hats, or headgear till the swelling or bruising has completely subsided.
Some risks of fillers treatment are:
Slight swelling and bruising that will disappear over time
Chances of infection
Temporary change in muscle sensation
Unsatisfactory results
These side effects are very rarely seen and Dr. Vasant Gholave takes utmost care to ensure the safety and comfort of his patients.
