While carrying out the procedure, the part of the skin is numbed using local anesthesia. Powerful pulses are applied to the skin aiming at the tattooed area. If the tattoo is multicolored, it might need different kinds of lasers of different wavelengths to get the ink off the skin.

2. Dermabrasion:

In this procedure, the area of tattooed skin is chilled and numbed. After which the tattooed skin is sanded down by a rotary device to deeper levels. The device has brushes and wheels that are abrasive which will then make the ink loosen up from the skin.

After the completion of this procedure, the affected skin may feel sore and can be swollen. It might take about two to three weeks to recover. This process is also done in combination with laser surgery at times.

3. Surgical Removal:

Surgical removal of the tattoo is done using a scalpel. The ink and parts of the upper skin are removed and then sutured back. This might take quite some time for the recovery. Although, unlike other procedures, surgical removal of the tattoo has to be done only once. There are rare times when a follow-up surgery is to be carried out.
